19.5/365 - fulfilled

nineteen point five // three six five

the canyon is so grand, it deserves two posts today.

so after the sunrise we headed down the South Kaibab trail for a
'quick' hike to the Colorado river. the South Kaibab trail is supposed to be one of the more challenging and steeper trails....8 1/2 hours, 13.4 miles and nearly 10
thousand feet in descending and ascending later, I can check off 'hike
grand canyon from rim to river and back in one day' off my to-do list.

several notes about the day. at the start of the hike, the park ranger
repeatedly warned against going to the river -- saying it is
incredibly challenging and that we may not have enough sunlight on the
way up. after finishing the hike, we can say he was correct in his assessment. so we ran out of water and food on the way back up with almost
3 hours of hiking up the canyon left. thoughts of going macgyver on
the cacti were running rampant through my head. second, we were
quickly running out of light with the sun having already set and no
end to our hike in sight. macgyver pt ii: thinking of whether sleeping
behind large rocks would be warmer or behind a tree and if I should
sleep with my sunglasses on so bugs won't invade my eyeballs. luckily
we got back to the trailhead not a minute too soon, it was nearly pitch
black as we sat to catch our breath.

needless to say, didn't have much of a chance to shoot the sunset with
my camera as I was too occupied with cactii, rocks, trees and bugs. I
did manage to snap this with my phone.

enjoy cause although we suffered tremendously, we certainly enjoyed
the experience!
